"How did you like Niagara Falls?" is a question every Canadian hears, and no doubt the answer should be simple - "I loved it every time" or "Tourist trap, just go once and that's enough". I had neither of those replies - until now - which has taken me 14 years. Summer of 2019 was when the long-awaited trip finally happened and expectations were sky high as we drove down the Southern Ontario highway.
THE FALLS
Late August guaranteed us a long line into the parking lot as we rolled down the windows and finally paid to get in. The crowds at 9:30 am were no joke and expected, as we walked amongst thousands of tourists seeing Niagara for the first time. Never has there been a character more in the centre of attention than how majestic Earth played - it's breathtaking seeing gallons of water give in to gravity and spill over the edge, sending mist and steam into the summer air. The countless number of rainbows encountered solidified the magic and makes you forget the increasing amount of sweat the body can produce.
THE CRUISE
Red ponchos on, we were ready for the Hornblower cruise - or were we? As the scene shifted from a leisurely pace on the river, I was not prepared for the deafening roar as we first approached the American Fall, and at last - the Horseshoe Fall. It engaged all 5 senses: I could hear the mass tumbling down, became blind as the streams of water seeps behind my sunglasses, feel the coolness on my heated skin, taste the refreshing misty air as we laughed and smelled the earthy mineral water. Pricey boat ticket I thought? Yes, but a free shower is included :)! It is definitely a bucket list adventure that got ticked off, but not necessarily a repeater haha.
So you might wonder what's my response to "How did you like Niagara Falls?" If you know me, the answer to the outdoors is always "Yes, loved it". As I'm typing this blog I yearn to go back when there are fireworks and light displays at night, when it's a frozen castle, and when it steams again in the hot summer air. And next time, definitely going to stop by the vineyards to get a "healthy" dose of wine.
Cheers,
Kelly
